Novel by Sonia Day wins international award
The Newfoundland Lunch Party, A Sisters of the Soil Novel – with Recipes has garnered a Silver Laurel for fiction from GardenComm International, a US-based organization representing garden communicators from around the world.
The accolade was announced at GardenComm’s annual conference in Columbus, Ohio on July 11.
“I was both thrilled and surprised to win,” says Day. “Bearing in mind the current tensions between Canada and the US, I didn’t think I stood a chance, as most of the competing books were by American writers.”
Former Toronto Star gardening columnist Day has written 10 books, won a number of awards and recently turned to writing novels. Her award-winning book is the second in a series about four older women, all passionate gardeners, who call themselves the Sisters of the Soil and meet up in different countries for fun times and good food. In Newfoundland, they get to taste truly fresh cod for the first time and also make an astonishing horticultural discovery. The first book in the series, Mexico Lunch Party, was published in 2022. She plans a third lunch party story, set in the Caribbean.
The Newfoundland Lunch Party by Sonia Day is published by Friesen Press, $31.99.
