Visual Arts Brampton’s weekly Art Refined Class for teens stimulates student’s creativity abilities through focused, in-depth art instruction. Students learn and hone their skills in a diverse range of fine arts media and techniques. This class welcomes young art enthusiasts of all skill levels. A recent acrylic painting unit was focused on surrealism, defined as: “Surrealism balances a rational vision of life with one that asserts the power of the unconscious and dreams. The movement’s artists find magic and strange beauty in the unexpected and the uncanny, the disregarded and the unconventional.” Students picked their own subject matter, sketched out several concepts and picked their favourite to paint on a 16x20" canvas. They spent four to five two-hour sessions on the project. Two of the recent works are featured in this issue.

When making the drawing I chose the whole skill and snake thing as I was really into reptiles and more scary looking things (if you know what I mean) at the time. I honestly didn’t think of a colour palette, I just winged it and hoped it looked good in the end. It’s not my best work and there are many more things I need to improve on.

When I made this artwork, I was trying to improve the skulls I paint, ultimately making the main focal point a skull as well. The flowers seemed like a neat addition and they worked well with the skull, almost representing “life and death”. The colour scheme mainly uses cooler colours as they matched the vibe.
