AGNEYA CHITKE: TORONTO ARTS FOUNDATION’S BREAKTHROUGH JAZZ ARTIST
Born in western India, Agneya Chitke’s early years were shaped by the intricacies of Hindustani music and tabla, alongside the sounds of early 2000s rock and hip-hop.
Toronto Arts Foundation announced Indo-Canadian percussionist and composer Agneya Chitke as the recipient of the 2026 Breakthrough Jazz Artist Award.
His debut album Agneya (2026) blends South Asian rhythmic cycles with contemporary improvisation, cinematic textures and global grooves. His music reflects a diasporic identity and a belief in rhythm as a shared language, inviting listeners into a sound world that is at once groove-driven, meditative and expansive.
Born in western India, Agneya grew up at the intersection of tradition and modernity. His early years were shaped by the intricacies of Hindustani music and tabla, alongside the sounds of early 2000s rock and hip-hop. This convergence of ancient rhythmic systems and global popular culture became the foundation of his artistic voice, where rhythm is not a fixed category but a fluid and evolving force.
Now emerging as a bandleader, Agneya represents the culmination of this journey. The album brings together a collective of collaborators whose diverse cultural and musical perspectives shape a richly layered sonic landscape. Rooted in rhythm yet open in form, the music moves beyond stylistic boundaries, creating space for connection through groove, movement, and shared presence.
With this debut release, Agneya is committed to building music that is rooted yet forward-looking. His work seeks to create space for under-represented voices within Canada’s arts landscape and to use rhythm as a means of connection, dialogue, and exchange across cultures.
He has performed locally and internationally at the Toronto Jazz Festival, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, Humboldt Forum, Berliner Hoffest, Dokkhuset Scene, and NH7 Weekender, among others.
“As a drummer and composer, I understand rhythm not only as a musical element but as a way of listening, relating, and making sense of the world,” Agneya. “I grew up surrounded by classical and folk traditions, and later immersed myself in jazz and contemporary music after moving to Toronto. Over time, these influences stopped feeling separate and began to feel like parts of one language.”
Established in 2014, the Breakthrough Jazz Artist Award celebrates Toronto’s outstanding jazz artists who are either in the early stages of their professional careers or who are new to pursuing a solo career after supporting other artists. The award includes a $10,000 cash prize for the recipient.
“We’re proud to shine a light on the extraordinary talent and promise in our local jazz community and support artists in their creative journeys,” says Toronto Arts Foundation CEO Kelly Langgard.
The Breakthrough Jazz Artist Award is the final Toronto Arts Award to be distributed in 2026. The Celebration of Cultural Life Award, Muriel Sherrin Award, Community Arts Award, Che Kothari Artist and Instigator Award, Arts for Youth Award, and Breakthrough Artist Award were all presented at the Mayor’s Arts Lunch, hosted by special guest Mayor Olivia Chow. Six Newcomer Artist Awards were distributed earlier in April at the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Awards Season Kick-Off event. Established in 1995, the Foundation mobilizes private partners and resources to champion and strengthen the arts sector, nurture creative potential, celebrate artistic achievement, and connect communities to the transformative benefits of the arts.
