CREATIVE SPACE

TO CAPTURE A DREAM

Visual Arts Brampton’s weekly Art Refined Class for teens stimulates students’ creative abilities through focused, in-depth art instruction. Students picked their own subject matter, sketched out several concepts and picked their favourite to paint on a 16x20" canvas. They spent four to five two-hour sessions on the project. Two of the recent works are featured in this issue.

Snake by Faith B, acrylic, age 13.

Surrealism is a chance to unite the fantastical and the real into your artwork. I was able to channel my love of serpents and dragons into this piece and combine them with my love for outer space, creating a piece that leads your eye to the centre of the canvas.

Untitled by Quentin C, acrylic, age 13.

When I was designing my piece, I wanted to think about what I remembered about my dreams. My dreams are more like stories with highs and lows, and randomness. My most prominent dream was about toys fighting a skeletal decaying dragon. I wanted to capture the scene that stuck with me in my art by showing the decaying parts and the horror of seeing something emerge from a shadow. I really wanted to capture that with the lighting and layout.
