THE JOSHIS SET TO SPARKLE IN MISSISSAUGA
Written in English, The Joshis is a play about a family gathered to celebrate the festive season of lights, but as the celebration reaches its peak, a dramatic turn of events changes their lives forever!
Sawitri Theatre and Very Serious Theatre Company (VSTC) present The Joshis, a contemporary Canadian play written by Max Kingsbury and directed by Devansh Shah and Raina Desal.
The production runs from October 22-30 at AN1 Studios in Mississauga. Written in English, The Joshis (pronounced joe-shes) it is a play about a family gathered to celebrate the festive season of lights, but as the celebration reaches its peak, a dramatic turn of events changes their lives forever!
“Sawitri Theatre Group is redefining how culturally rooted stories can move, challenge, and unite contemporary audiences,” says Jasmine Sawant the founder and artistic co-director. Founded in 2003, Sawitri Theatre Group is an award-winning not-for-profit theatre company based in Mississauga, Ontario. Under the leadership of Jasmine Sawant and Shruti Shah, Sawitri has produced more than 93 works, including 23 full-length plays across four languages: English, Marathi, Gujarati, and Hindi. Recognized for its innovative and risk-taking approach, Sawitri is committed to staging culturally specific stories with universal resonance. The company creates space for intergenerational and intercultural dialogue while providing meaningful opportunities for both emerging and established artists. With a mandate to inform, entertain, and heal, Sawitri continues to shape Canada’s theatrical landscape through bold storytelling and deep community engagement. Sawitri Theatre is also the producer and presenter of the Mississauga Multilingual Fringe Festival (MMFF), the only multilingual fringe festival in North America. Operationally, Sawitri Theatre Group is partly funded by the City of Mississauga and the Ontario Arts Council, as well as by The Open Space, Nitin Sawant, and the unstinting support of family, friends and volunteers.
Very Serious Theatre Company is a newly minted new generation theatre Company that presents work in Mississauga and Toronto.
