AN EYE FOR THE SURREAL

Students pick their own subject matter at Visual Arts Brampton’s weekly Art Refined Class for teens. Representative image from UNSPLASH.

Visual Arts Brampton’s weekly Art Refined Class for teens stimulates students’ creative abilities through focused, in-depth art instruction. Students picked their own subject matter, sketched out several concepts and picked their favourite to paint on a 16x20" canvas. They spent four to five two-hour sessions on the project. Two of the recent works are featured in this issue.

Untitled, acrylic, by Japleen D, age 13.

In this whimsical surrealist acrylic painting, we can observe pink ribbon flowers growing in a tall turquoise vase, on an exaggerated shadow that is being cast across the blue-green background. At the bottom, we can see a curious yellow chick looking up at the vase. This adds drama and mystery in the painting. Bold colours contrast, and the simplified shapes engage you into a fairytale that captures imagination, but also nature. The painting conveys a balance of wonder and innocence, capturing the thoughts of a child. The overall nature of this artwork provokes thoughts about meaning, showing thoughts about meaning, and showing dynamics of reality versus fantasy from everyday objects.

Baby Spork, acrylic, by Noor B,  age 14.

This surrealism painting shows a couple where their heads are replaced by a spoon and a fork. I created this piece to be funny and meaningful. The spoon and fork represent how any ordinary relationship picture is. Just like real people in a relationship. Even though they look unusual. The baby spoon shows that they have a child, making them a family. I wanted this painting to be funny, creative and meaningful and to show the love and connection to the family. Lastly, the red background adds warmth and emotion, showing that it is a loving, caring family even if they look unusual.
