COMMUNITY CELEBRATES THE TRANSFORMED BRAMPTON LIBRARY BRANCH

Hundreds of well-wishers and school-age students flocked to the newly renovated South Fletcher’s Branch Library at its grand opening event on May 5, 2026.

This branch, which first opened its doors in the Susan Fennell Sportsplex in 1996, has undergone a full and substantive renovation within its existing 14,000 square feet. What was once an open space filled with bookshelves and study tables, is now a light-filled, modern, and functional environment with defined usage areas and varied collections for all ages. A purpose-built Library designed for what the community needs now, the transformation includes new exterior windows and glass walls separating programming and quiet study, creative and youth spaces, and bookable meeting rooms.

Prior to cutting the ribbon on this exciting branch redevelopment, Brampton Library CEO Todd Kyle welcomed Mayor Patrick Brown, who spoke about the Library and recreation centre as one destination for sports, community gathering, lifelong learning, and new addition to the After-Hours Study Hall initiative. Since its soft opening on March 2, 2026, this branch alone now welcomes 750 visitors per day, seven days a week.

Regional Councillors Paul Vicente (who also serves on the Brampton Library Board), Dennis Keenan, and Martin Medeiros each spoke about all the innovative ways residents can enjoy the space, including a welcoming children’s area equipped with a Touch2Play interactive and diverse gaming station. Items for free borrowing including board and video games, museum and parks passes, seasonal activity kits, telescopes, GoPros, and birding kits. Brampton Library Board Chair Nicole Russell thanked Mayor Brown, Councillors, Library staff and everyone involved in making this dream a reality.

After the official remarks and ribbon-cutting were complete, the South Fletcher’s community celebration continued until close at 9 pm. Guests enjoyed a wide variety of interactive activities including giant games, Nintendo Switch tournaments, scavenger hunts, facepainting and balloon making, as well as opportunities to win prizes. A memorable event highlight was the Name Our Library Mascot contest, which generated excitement and creativity among attendees and added an extra sense of community involvement to the celebration.

“The Library Board is proud to see the results of this important redevelopment of South Fletcher’s Branch; completed on time and on budget,” said Nicole Russell, Brampton Library Board Chair. “The new space reflects community and staff input by providing more natural light, a welcoming street presence, safer and more efficient spaces for staff and facilities and furnishings that better reflect how people actually use libraries today.

“We heard from the community about their needs for separate spaces for quiet study, collaboration, and engagement, and we’ve accomplished all of this in our reimagined South Fletcher’s Branch,” said Todd Kyle, Chief Executive Officer, Brampton Library. “We are already seeing how much residents appreciate our thoughtful approach and are thankful to the Mayor and Council for all their support in making it happen.”
